A young orca was found beached on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in Mowachaht/Muchalaht territory on November 14. Ray Williams, head of the only family living on this territory, contacted the First Nation's staff to make sure a proper ceremony was held for the mammal. Killer whales are considered ancestors. Nearly 60 Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation members including elders, chiefs, and other community members gathered to perform a ceremony to release the spirit of the whale.
