Gene Anne Joseph, the first librarian of First Nations heritage in British Columbia, has received an honorary Doctor of Laws at Vancouver Island University (VIU). During her graduate studies and her time as the University of British Columbia (UBC) Native Indian Teacher Education Program (NITEP) Resource Centre, Joseph created a new classification system with correct terminology used by First Nations communities. This system is now known as the First Nations House of Learning Subject Headings (FNHL-SH) and classification, and the UBC has committed to protecting this system.
