Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott has declared the overrepresentation of Indigenous children in foster care a humanitarian crisis. The most recent census found that 52 percent of children under the age of 15 in foster homes are Indigenous, even though Indigenous children make up just eight percent of the under-15 Canadian population. In British Columbia, 64 percent of the kids in foster care identify as Indigenous. Indigenous kids in foster care typically face worse outcomes than their non-Indigenous peers, including separation from their communities and inter-generational trauma.
