During the 2014 whooping cough outbreak on Haida Gwaii, 123 probable and confirmed cases of whooping cough were reported. If rates go above normal, the health officer can choose to declare an outbreak, but the northern health officer had retired and had not yet been replaced when the numbers began to climb. After an interim health officer was appointed and an outbreak declared, resources began to arrive from the BC government to help control the outbreak.
