On May 25, 2018, the Métis in Fort McMurray purchased 3.7 hectares of Crown land from the province of Alberta. Purchasing this land is a step toward reconciliation. The Metis Fest was held on this land this year on May 31. A cultural centre that will include an Elder gathering area and community meeting room will be built on the land and will represent Métis from Fort McMurray, Fort Chipewyan, Fort McKay, and Anzac.
