Senator Murray Sinclair wants to institute a statutory holiday in September as a day for every Canadian time reflecting on how to improve relationships with Indigenous peoples. Sinclair's statement came as a response to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's announcement that his government will create a new holiday to fulfil a recommendation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). He believes discussion should center on improving Canada's current relationship with Indigenous peoples and not just on residential schools.
