A number of schools that serve Indigenous children are starting the school year with unfilled teacher positions. Some of the reasons for the teacher shortage include a large number of retiring teachers, difficulty recruiting teachers to remote areas, and a Supreme Court decision that forced the government of B.C. to implement smaller class sizes and rehire its teachers. In addition, First Nations teachers are not allowed to collect the benefits or get the services of the Alberta Teachers’ Association.
