The federal government is getting ready to develop legislation to create the long-awaited Indigenous Languages Act. The government will contract with Canadian Heritage over the next 10 months to develop legislation that will promote, preserve, and revitalize Indigenous languages. The latest census data shows there are 70 Indigenous languages in Canada with 260,000 language speakers. Several of these Indigenous languages are endangered.
