Sq’ewá:lxw First Nation Land Use Summary

Resource Description:

The purpose of the Sq’ewá:lxw Land Use and Zoning Law is to promote environmentally responsible, healthy, safe, and well planned use of Sq’ewá:lxw lands. The Law will apply to the whole area of the reserves (Skawahlook IR# 1 and Ruby Creek IR# 2), including Nation Land and land held under Certificate of Possession, and to members and non-members.

The Land Use and Zoning Law enables the Sq’ewá:lxw Land Use Plan. Land use planning allows economic, cultural, and social development while ensuring community sustainability. Land use planning is a Nation building exercise. It is an exercise of Indigenous rights and an act of governance. The land use plan expresses the vision of the people as a spatial arrangement of permitted and prohibited land uses.
